Tummy Tuck or Liposuction?

Posted July 08, 2013 in Liposuction, Tummy Tuck

As the summer months approach us in beautiful Southern California, many people desire to have a stomach that is flat and toned in appearance. Unfortunately, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and the natural aging process can affect the way our abdominals look. This often leads many individuals to seek out procedures, such as tummy tuck surgery or liposuction, in order to restore a more slim and attractive appearance to their midsection. Although both of these surgical treatments target the abdominal area, they are very different from one another.

Tummy Tuck

Also known as an abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery is best suited for individuals who have sagging skin and fat around their midsection. By making the necessary incisions, excess skin is excised and fat cells are suctioned out, leaving patients with a firmer and more defined stomach. A tummy tuck is particularly effective for mothers and weight loss patients because it tightens the abdominal muscles that were stretched out during pregnancy or weight gain. Men who cannot seem to get rid of that extra roll of fat on the lower abdomen (spare tire) can also see a noticeable improvement in the way their abdominal muscles look.

Liposuction

Liposuction is used to remove stubborn fat deposits from many parts of the body including the abdominals. Generally, this procedure is less invasive than a tummy tuck since only fat is suctioned out through tiny incisions, and little to no skin is removed. This procedure tends to work best for men and women who are within 30 percent of their ideal body weight, but are looking to eliminate the last few pounds that regular diet and exercise are unable to get rid of.

Dr. Terry Dubrow is one of the most respected plastic surgeons in Orange County and frequently performs liposuction and tummy tuck surgery for many of his patients. He is dedicated to helping them get the body they want by providing safe and effective procedures at his Newport Beach practice.
